Polyteknicheskaya Show

1st - 16th June

Cabot Circus Pop Up Gallery

In the Soviet 1960s, a new neighbourhood sprang up on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, which would be locally called “Polyteknicheskaya”. One of the first Soviet-planned suburbs, those who were given private apartments in these modern blocks were considered a fortunate elite.

Polyteknicheskaya today hovers in between states—its landscape never having lost the cosmic sheen of the ‘60s or fully recovered from the moral and physical shock of the ‘90s.

US based filmmaker Emily Newman’s Don’t Love Here/Toska Tokamaka and Russian Zhenia Golant’s paintings of the Polyteknicheskaya area draw from a workshop run by the artists intended to engage local children on the theme of their neighbourhood, and in doing so, consider the legacy, present state and possible futures of the area.
